Wakefield’s twin brother duo Kurtz aren’t the predictable types. Fun, heavy, and slightly mental, but not predictable. For example, their second record is an eight-track LP called Made of Waves that features guest vocals from Frank Turner, Arrows of Love’s Lyndsey Lupe, and Crushed Beaks’ Matt Poile, and they’ve chosen to celebrate this by releasing a video for one of the album’s three instrumental cuts.

But singles and promos are meant to get people interested in records and by that token, “Black Noir” is the perfect single. It’s a tight, brash track that crams an absurd amount into two-and-a-half minutes with no vocals. The sludgey metal riff becomes a Battles-like hook and then the drums are really loud and then it’s over and you don’t really know what happened but it was fun and you wanna ride it again. Top marks for excellent green screen use in the video, too.

It’s worth pointing out that Made of Waves is a strange and brilliant record. Frank Turner—so long a troubadour—rekindles his Million Dead era screams on “White Knuckles” before the record veers off into every direction. Left-field highlight: a reworking of the dark, doomed seven-minute instrumental “Skyscraper” from the band’s first record with Chris and Adam Prendergast, formerly of The Kooks and Big Pink respectively..
