Love, sex, heartache, hate, pain, and control are just a few of the issues illustrator Lauralee Benjamin explores through the nude drawings on her Instagram account. Benjamin’s subjects are women tied up or in positions of domination, poised in a perfect pose or lost in the throes of ecstacy, rendered both in realistic detail and surreal shapes and colors to reclaim agency over the objectified female body.

“I have always been interested in the ways women harness and express their sexuality,” Benjamin writes on her website. “I use images appropriated from pornography to hijack the patriarchal sentiments and flip them into feminist narratives. I hope that others, women in particular, can relate to the positive and negative emotions I’m trying to convey.” This message is distilled in Benjamin’s new book, Queen of Your Body Parts, released by Over the Edge Books. QOYBP is, “an illustrated reference guide of every emotion you’ve felt in a consumptive relationship—using only the bodies of nude women,” and you can find it on Amazon.
