My friend Nondor Nevai and I just had a discussion about the matter of Varg Vikernes’s (aka Count Grishnackh) imprisonment. Nondor was confident that Varg would never be released, but here it comes. During the span of the 90s there were a lot of death threats towards Varg in retaliation over his murdering Euronymous. I have to say that that thing really died down so long ago that I can’t really see anyone trying anything at this point. When all this stuff happened in the scene in the early 90s all of the key players were just kids—now they’ve mostly moved on or have too much to lose to try and get back at Varg for the murder. All the crime was really kids stuff, and none of these guys are kids anymore.
I will say that I think Varg Vikernes is not necessarily notable beyond his crimes, and I don’t see the point of making him a hero or a villain or talking much about him at all. I always thought his music sucked, despite the hoopla surrounding his murder, church burnings, and right-wing agenda. I heard the first three Burzum albums when they came out and they were all lame crap compared to what Dark Throne, Immortal, Mayhem, Emperor, etc. released.
