Texas A&M Coach Cries About Player Decommitting, Causing Another Player to Decommit

Texas A&M receivers coach Aaron Moorehead had an interesting evening on Twitter last night. Tate Martell, a highly ranked quarterback recruit who had committed to play at A&M, decided he was going to take his talents elsewhere. Or at the very least, according to his tweet, he was going to re-open the recruitment process. Moorehead was apparently unhappy with this decision and proceeded to rant about loyalty.

He then tried to say he wasn’t really talking about Martell, even though his tweet was six minutes after Martell’s. Even still, as we all know, the truth is in the hashtags.

While Moorehead was guarding and respecting A&M football, another recruit was leaving it. Mannie Netherly, an even higher ranked recruit and a wide receiver who would be coached directly by Moorehead, tweeted that he was also decommitting, specifically because of Moorehead’s behavior.

And because this is college football and not a single person who calls themselves a fan seems to be able to act like a rational person, Netherly started to get guff from A&M fans for not wanting to play for a whiny, passive-aggressive baby. So he tweeted another message, again showing himself to be more mature than virtually everyone involved in this thing.

Other recruits chimed in along the way, noting that A&M will probably lose more recruits in the immediate and distant future.

This is in many ways the perfect college football story. Team/coach thirst leads them to feel entitled to a young teenager who is (theoretically!) deciding on where to educate himself while also playing football. This is a pretty big decision and coaches, who are more like salesmen at this point, pull out all the stops to woo them. When a kid has a chance to think about it clearly and decides maybe he wants to go another way, here come the waterworks from the actual adults in the relationship.
