The Starbucks founder made the comment to Senator Bernie Sanders during a hearing called “The Need to End Illegal Union Busting at Starbucks.”
“Make sure you sign a union card on the way out,” ALU president Chris Smalls said.
“They are firing union leaders across the country, cutting hours, bullying workers,” Starbucks Workers United told VICE News.
The National Labor Relations Board just filed a massive complaint against the coffee giant, alleging retaliation against dozens of union organizers.
The UFCW filed to represent workers at three Starbucks stores in Wisconsin. Not everyone is happy about that.
At least 18 pro-union employees have been fired since February, in what workers say is an attempt to stop an increasingly popular union campaign.
“If a union is certified, benefits and wages will essentially be frozen while the parties negotiate the contract,” the letter stated.
Schultz made his remarks on the very same day the company fired a union organizer at a store in Arizona.
“We get the best experience of anyone in the country. But we’re still saying this is not enough for us to be successful.”
Schultz visited Starbucks workers in Buffalo days before a historic union election that could have reverberating effects across the fast-food and retail industries.
