Julian Luxemburg’s got a dinner date. He’s invited over a beautiful girl to share his evening with and everything’s set up. The meal’s been prepared, the wine’s been bought, the table’s set. Now all he has to do is wait for her to show. And there’s the problem. In a new immersive, existential indie video game Dinner Date due to be released in November by Stout Games, you play Julian’s subconsciousness. His thoughts and fears pour forth as you sit at the dinner table awaiting his date that’s never going to show, instead mulling over the anxieties that are eating away at his mind. It’s certainly an interesting and abstract premise, and with the game only lasting 25 minutes, you won’t be sitting there all night like you could be on a real date. But for a truly soul-crushing evening you could even play it, then go out and get stood up on a date for real. As high concept games go, this is up there in the chin-stroking, Gauloises-smoking department, and it even recommends a bottle of wine to drink while playing.
