This weekend Steve Munsey, one of the flashiest pastors alive, held the first ever 3D Easter celebration at his church in Munster, Indiana. We weren’t there, but after watching the behind the scenes videos of old Jesus nailed to a blood-soaked cross in front of a green screen while Munsey directs him to “Look up as much as you can, try to look up to the heavens,” we’re pretty sure the final product would have been worth the drive. Munsey screened the 3D crucifixion SEVEN times over the course of the weekend, which is enough in-your-face absolution to save Pontius Pilate himself.
Of course, this isn’t Steve’s first theatrical rodeo. When he was just 19 he wrote a play called Jesus of Nazareth, or JON, if you want to use the handy acro like Steve does. Judging from the trailer (embedded below), the show is a pretty big deal. It’s got exorbitant explosions, drama, blood, and a cameo from Dr. Zaius from Planet of the Apes.

As you can tell from those sweet pyrotechnics, Steve’s church, The Family Christian Center, is one of the more tech-savy worship operations happening today. They’re hip to the Twitter, Facebook, and you can even submit your prayers through their website.
Steve’s penchant for outlandish God antics is well-known. Remember that time he rode a real live horse through church for some reason? That was so awesome.
Or how about when he let Jesus take his place on the cross, even though Steve admitted he was the one who made the choice to lie, have sex before marriage, commit adultery, get drunk, and do drugs. Munsey parties! And he apparently likes coffee too. The church has a fucking Starbucks sitting next to their life-size replica of the Last Supper. Money changers in the temple indeed.
If you happen to be in the Munster/Chicago area, JON‘s last show of 2011 is this Saturday. It might be worth your while to pop in. And if you do, send us pictures.
