You know what you get when you stop time in animation? Art, some of which is not too shabby. And if cartoons are the mind off its leash, every single piece of work that went into making it is an agent of possibility. Put that way, the exhibition opening tonight at Synchronicity Space featuring drawings, paintings, and sculpture from animators is a quantum physics hologram. Or else it’s just a fucking cool collection of work from the likes of Bruce Bickford (his first LA gallery appearance), Adam Beckett, Sky-David, Amy Lockhart, David O’Reilly, Andy Ristaino, Screen Novelties, Will Sweeney, Jim Tozzi, JJ Villard, and Jon Vermilyea. Here’s a tiny sneak preview of Vermilyea’s work, from the gallerists:
This reception is the pre-game for Cinefamily’s Animation Breakdown, a festival that kicks off tomorrow with co-presenters Cartoon Brew and Animation Block Party showcasing the best of outrageously strange, shape-shifty, mind-expanding international animation from days current and of yore. Examples: an advance screening of Pixar’s newest short La Luna, an evening with Don Hertzfeldt, and Polish surrealist masters such as Zbigniew Rybczynski.
