Hey, remember my best friend from grade school, Ari Gold? The one who sang the “My Buddy” commercial jingle when he was a kid? You may remember that I interviewed him a while back about our very strict Orthodox Jewish upbringing and how we both burst from the shackles of religious repression in order to become our fully-realized, true and weird selves (And by weird I mean gay. And also weird). So now he has a new video out for his single “Make My Body Rock.” He first told me about this video when I went up to his parents’ place in a Jewish bungalow colony in the Catskills for Yom Kippur last month. “I see the video as a deconstruction of heterosexual marriage and a heterosexist economy,” he whispered to me in synagogue, right before the rabbi blew the shofar and the congregation began singing “L’Shana Ha-ba-ah B’Yerushaliyim” (“Next Year In Jerusalem”). “Also I play a vampire!” he continued, leaning towards me over the wobbly divider that keeps the men and women separate while they pray. “I’m a Wall Street executive and I come home and have a threeway with my wife and her lover, then I get blood poured all over me and we eat our child!” “Wow!” I said. “Shush!” said the old people around us trying to pray. Then we went back to his parents’ house and broke our fasts on herring and rugelach. So think about THAT when you watch this. Adds a whole new level, right?
Oh yeah, and here’s Ari’s contribution to the It Gets Better campaign.
