Remember back in 1999 when you were still using dial-up and it took a whole night to download an MP3 on Napster? If you were a blossoming indie nerd back then, then you probably remember Epitonic.com, one of the first legal music sharing websites to offer streaming tunes and free downloads. Curated by three small town Southern boys as a means to gain access to new music, the founders posted promotional MP3 files from independent labels and bands in the hope that by giving away something small, music fans would support their newfound favorite artists.
After falling upon hard times in 2004, and with the launches of other successful streaming radio channels like Pandora and GrooveShark, Epitonic seemed to fade away into the abyss of internet relics past.

Now, with help from Kickstarter, the old team recently met their monetary goal to relaunch the site in a more broadband-compatible (and aesthetically pleasing) version. Until that happens, however, they’ve brought back the old site you once knew and loved, including the old (now dated sounding) genre sections like “math rock.” Follow them on Twitter @Epitonic for easy access to daily MP3 downloads, and for news about the official relaunch date.
