You may have missed last Sunday’s comic, what with all the smoked animals and beaches and not looking at the computer. Well, Ginette Lapalme made it. She’s a quirky little Canadian with big glasses who made a big internet splash by drawing faces onto butts and boobs and giners and such. She’s part of a neat little group of Canadians who are doing funny, pretty comics. We interrogated her.
Vice: What’s your deal, Ginette? I drew you one time wearing poofy shorts. Where you got those poofy shorts?
Ginette Lapalme: I found those swimtrunks in the little boy aisle at Value Village. I enjoy how they swoosh. there’s this little floating pocket on the inside that confuses me though. What is this for? Spare change?

You put faces on parts of the body where faces usually aren’t. How’d you come to that?
I was invited to a comic con (TCAF) two years ago and had to make a zine for it. I had never made any comics before, and didn’t know what to do. at the time I was looking at a lot of vintage porn and decided to draw some of these girls and just compile them in a small booklet because this seemed really easy. Most of the drawings involved adding faces to their tits and stuff–it’s moved south since then.
What do you find visually appealing, what’s influencing you?
Cartoons have always been the biggest driving force behind my art since I was a kid. For a while I was really into the idea of some day animating for Disney or doing stop-motion projects. I’ve gone a different route thus far, though I’d still really love to animate my images eventually. Nearly everything influences me though–I don’t know how it couldn’t, really. I think I absorb way too much. I’m always watching retarded videos on Youtube when I should be working on projects.
That video is weird and awful as hell.
I’m going to do a cover song someday.
Are Pokemon a big deal for you? I’m surprised at how many young artists I like are really really into Pokemon.
They were a semi-big deal, I guess. I mean, I first became aware of the TV show when I was 13 or so, so I never got into the whole card collecting thing. But I went to see the first few flicks at the theater with my younger sister (who is still crazy about Pokemon) and now there are ten movies and I’m still trying to get through all of them. I especially remember really loving the soundtrack to the first flick, as it was continually played in our mini-van during 1999-2000. Also, oh man, when Pikachu tries to revive Ash after he steps between Mew and Mew-two and it turns him to stone and all the Pokemon start crying magical tears… That still gets me.
I know nothing about you, Ginette Lapalme. Who are you Ginette?
I’m a loser mostly. I don’t go outside much and I’ve watched 41,920 videos since I joined Youtube on March 8, 2006. I’ve got lots of scratches on my right arm because I fight with my cat Washington even though my boyfriend keeps telling me not to because it’s turning my kitty into a jerk. I’m starting at my “real” job this week, a bilingual office position that was fairly easy to get because there aren’t that many francophones in Toronto. I owe a lot of people money:
a. to my boyfriend for paying the cat’s vet bills
b. to renting a silkscreening studio with my troupe HaloHalo
c. paying back my buddy’s dad for lending us cash for our comic, Woweezonk 2.
Also I just cut my hair in the bathroom a few days ago and it’s a fucking mess. Is that enough?
Yes.
