In August, an 8-month pregnant Amanda Palmer stood above crowds congregating outside of the New York Public Library in the nude, immaculately body-painted, and surrounded by books. The piece was a recreation of Damien Hirst’s Verity statue: one-half of Palmer’s body was coated in a dull brown and the other, vividly detailed into an anatomical cross section.
The 39-year-old singer-cum-performance artist, belovedly known as “Amanda Fucking Palmer” by fans, alluded to the act earlier in the week on her blog. “IF YOU ARE ANYWHERE In or near NYC,” she writes, “I’m doing a kind of goodbye Thing before going off to birth this baby […] this is a slightly weird one, but bear with me….it’ll be worth it, I swear. Without ruining the surprise: I’m going to do a quick PUBLIC PERFORMANCE & CHILDREN’S BOOK DRIVE, 8-month fetus and all.”
