Square Wave documents an emerging community of contemporary musicians trafficking in electronica, hip-hop, and avant-garde. In an age where any beat geek or tech head can be a producer, technology has given rise to scenes and collectives in unlikely locales; Square Wave is a space for those communities to reach a global audience.
fLako is cleaning house, sweeping up the remnants of his past work into a neat little pile. That might explain the clump of hair on the cover of the Mesektet LP; last month this Chilean-born, London-based producer dropped this 30-track, two ton record of bangers.

The material was produced before 2008 when he broke out with a sonic hybrid somewhere between classic electronic-ers Plaid and a soulful beatstyle previously reserved for bellowing R&B singers.
Championed by tastemakers like Gilles Peterson and Hudson Mohawke, fLako is making his transition from held-up underdog to ambassador for a sound being forged by himself and his contemporaries at Project: Mooncircle and Error Broadcast. The hip hop and electronic elements are in perfect balance with this one. Vocal samples, wrapped in analog effects, are spread over a toasted boom-bap beat that’s just a little bit crunchy.
Video evidence indicate that fLako’s live show drives home the madness heard on record. Check him in this video for “Loose Bells,” a track off the bonus 7-inch that comes with The Mesektet vinyl:
Look at him pressing all those buttons. He’s all like beep boop bleep boobeep wowowowomp womp. Here’s another anthem, hilariously titled “Sun Ba.”
