EXCLUSIVE: Whistleblower Warned of Coronavirus Danger in Prison Where a Woman Just Died After Giving Birth
A staffer at a federal prison in Texas described looming “catastrophe” after 30-year-old Andrea Circle Bear gave birth while on a ventilator.
After releasing prisoners to avoid overcrowding of jails during the pandemic, authorities now are looking for newer ways to track those out on bail.
“The quality is terrible,” said one federal prison staffer of the KN95 he received. “I don’t even know where they got ’em from.”
"COVID-19 will create havoc and transform New York state prisons into death camps, and it will be on his watch."
Five people have died from COVID-19 at FCI Oakdale I in Louisiana.
“They’ve signed our death warrant,” an incarcerated woman said. “We’re sitting here waiting to be gassed.”
Darnell couldn't afford his $10,000 bail, so he slept for weeks in a Cook County Jail dormitory while people around him coughed.
“We’re sitting ducks,” a man serving a life sentence in California told VICE news.
At least 17 prison workers are also infected. "We know we’re exposing our families," one said.
“At this point, my concern is that COVID-19 is becoming a death sentence at Oakdale FCI,” said one attorney with a client in the prison.
Coronavirus is spreading across the Bureau of Prisons, already killing one inmate in Louisiana and threatening to overwhelm local hospitals.
