Just like a real UFO, UFO graffiti flies around inside corners and surface areas like a real little visitor of Earth. His peaceful alien head poking out of a wee ship is always benevolently watching, reminding us of that gray area and those questions that make life feel very strange and gloriously purposeful and supernatural. There is not just earth-life, succinct answers, hating your job and your zits, eating up yo’ supper, and then death—there is cosmically more and its about to get weirder and its gonna freak you out in a good way.
This graffiti pal is a gentle reminder, a warm nod from the mother ship. This is what makes UFO my fave, because you will find him in the smallest crevice, the most unassuming cleft, the teensey tiniest of pavemet or pipe ever. Most of the time he’s big, but the best of the times, he is small as a dime. I have found him etched, an inch wide, in places where only sad people look: down. I instantly felt the infinity of space and beings…I am never alone.

Have you ever found a mushroom in the woods? Sometimes it looks exactly like a genial little erect peenhead that has stroked itself from the dirt. He doesn’t quite look like he belongs where you found him. He is so fresh and outer-space pure, poking through the dank soil like E.T’s finger. Truly a netherworld visitor. Then you go, and just like an alien destroying a human, you overexcitedly start grabbing at him, and he then melts all crumbly inside your stupid grubby little Quasimodo fist. Though if you pet him gently he does have that sorta pink fleshy human vibe—a bit like the chilly skin on a dead little girl’s knee—he might be unearthly and just visiting after all.
He is goofy-looking and friendly-seeming though. Like if he said “Hi!” it would sound like Scooby Doo or like that weird moldy vociferation that Tim Allen does on Home Improvement. What a chill, tiny friend to discover in the scary, dark, bloodthirsty woods! Nonetheless, he is a friendly presence in an oppressive environment. Living in the city makes it kinda rare to happen upon that wee magical ‘shroom buddy. But I’ve found his kindred spirit in UFO, and every time I forget to look, the omnipotent space cutie face finds me when I need him most.
