Contemporary art titans Yayoi Kusama and Ai Weiwei (whose works we’ve covered here, here, and here) get a futuristic update that only CGI can illustrate in animator Ziye Liu‘s new short film, Themes and Variations. Liu warps the mutated stools in Weiwei’s Grapes, and Untitled hexagonal spheres into spiraling obelisks, while eliminating gravity in Kusama’s Narcissus Garden and Polka Dots installation. The results explore “the infinite possibilities” of each artwork—conversing with, rather than “improving” upon them—a stunning display of animation prowess.
