He’s a hippy pinko fag. He really is. And he’s saying it loud and proud. With his black beret and bright red lipstick, Gay Che (real name Victor Hugo) is a militant gay rights activist/communist who has become a fixture at political demonstrations in Chile.
He spends a lot of time expressing his homosexual socialism through kooky dancing, cross-dressing, streaking and throwing water balloons. Even the Chilean gay community is embarrassed of him.

The real Che hated gays, according to film-maker Bruce LaBruce. But Gay Che battles on undeterred. Like the real-life radical, he is determined to spread his revolution throughout Latin America. However, instead of a fostering a peasant-led armed struggle, he’s doing it through a documentary about his life.
El Che de los Gays is being shown at film festivals in Bilbao, Barcelona and more recently Havana, where it caused a stir since Che is a national hero and any degradation of his image is a criminal offence – unless it’s on a Che keyring or something.
With all the ubiquitous tshirts and trinkets, you might’ve thought that the significance of Che Guevara has long been commodified to death. No way Jose!
Director Steven Soderbergh yesterday announced that he is going to make not one but two movies about Che Guevara.
With the recent election of Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua, huge swathes of Latin America are again falling under socialist rule – Hugo Chávez in Venezuela, Lula in Brazil, Néstor Kirchner in Argentina, and Evo Morales in Bolivia.
By hook or by crook, it seems the Commies are making a comeback.
