Jeremiah Johnson—or Nullsleep—is a chiptune musician and the founding partner and co-curator of Blip Festival. Not content with only creating audio that explores “the tension between order and chaos,” he’s now decided to explore that dynamic, and more, in the world of online gaming. But his creation Void Gaze isn’t just your average Flash game. Instead it’s interactive text-based net art that explores the world of sight.
Void Gaze was commissioned by Parallelograms, an online publication that commissions artists, designers and writers to create work that explores “the relationship between images and interpretation.” Parallelograms provides the artists with an image found online, which they use as a starting point to riff off. Nullsleep’s project starts with the line “You are standing on an endless plane… There is something laying on the ground.” From there, you use a series of text commands to answer the prompts, progressing through the game by solving puzzles. You’re rewarded with gif art (woo!)—a selection of which is below—which also serves to illustrate the story.

The story itself involves you staring into the void of a stranger’s eyes and entering a netherworld of floating trees, orbs and resin that smells like crashed hard drives. Go begin this cyber art adventure over at Parallelograms.
