G Herbo Says He Doesn’t Know Who These Two Iconic Hip-Hop Producers Are

Believe it or not, not every rapper is a hip-hop historian. There are some artists who live and breathe the genre, who know the ins and outs of its history. Think of your biggest rap nerds like Lupe Fiasco or the biggest gatekeepers and golden age bastions like Jadakiss or Raekwon. However, some rappers aren’t especially hip to certain aspects of the genre and culture. This could be for a variety of subtle reasons or just plain ignorance. Regardless, it’s not always an intrinsic knowledge. This is the case for G Herbo, who reveals he has no idea who two of the most iconic producers of all time are.

Recently, the Chicago rapper spoke on the Adam Friedland Show for a lengthy interview. There, they tackle everything from trauma, the history of drill music, and a bunch more. However, one section of the conversation sees G Herbo go through the choosing game. For instance, he picks Tupac over Biggie and leans closer towards Gucci Mane over Young Jeezy, despite being fans of both artists. However, when asked about J Dilla and Madlib in a producer battle, Herb responds with confusion.

G Herbo Doesn’t Know Who J Dilla Is

Friedland asks the rapper if that was a “white question,” which gets a laugh out of Herbo and says it was. “I don’t… Hey, don’t kill me nobody. Who are they?” he asks. The comedian clearly finds the humor in him explaining hip-hop culture to one of the most prominent Chicago rappers working today.

After Friedland explains who Madlib was by referencing Quasimoto and the iconic Madvillainy, G Herbo says he’s definitely heard of the former at least. Consequently, he ends up picking the producer he’s at least vaguely aware of. The comedian ends up cosigning his take by explaining that the longevity helps in Madlib’s favor. “It’s the right answer. Dilla died, and it’s very sad, but it’s the right answer,” Friedland says. “Just ’cause you’re dead doesn’t mean you win… I’m sorry that I said that.”

It goes without saying that some fans took an exception to this. They’re upset that G Herbo is an artist and hasn’t done the due diligence to learn about iconic artists in the culture. “I really dislike when rappers dont really love rap like the listeners. Not knowing either and being an artist is kinda crazy,” one person comments on Instagram.
