LABELWATCH – SUFFERING JUKEBOX

Suffering Jukebox was started by Jack Cooper of Mazes and Joel, the owner of the excellent Deaf Institute venue in Manchester. They are inspired by labels like Sex Is Disgusting and Paradise Vendors Inc, who have released Mazes’ music before. As you might expect from a label named after a Silver Jews song, they aren’t releasing the latest dystopian-RnB-robo-mega-Gaga-Monae smashes, more like indie-rock drenched in tape hiss and reverb. Listen and download tracks from their roster below. All the band blabbing down there is by Jack.

Colleen Green

Videos by VICE

Colleen Green‘s tape “Milo Goes To Compton” is my favorite record this year, I really hope someone doesn’t steal her off us because we’d love to do an album with her once we get our head around this record label lark. Her cover of Blink 182’s “M&Ms” is up there with my favorite covers ever and made me attempt to re-evaluate Blink, (people seem to be getting back into them but they’re still awful). Colleen’s a total star and her blog is like my bible.

Milk Maid

Milk Maid is Martin Cohen. He records all of his songs with some help from a couple of lads who are in a band called Weird Era. Martin’s a Guided By Voices obsessive, so much so he’s paying a million pounds (probably) to go see them in Las Vegas. I hope for him they don’t do a European tour. Obviously no one sounds like GBV, but they’re a good reference point for Martin’s music as it’s super melodious and life affirming.

Former Bullies

Former Bullies have been playing in Manchester for nearly six years, suffering from a perceived lack of ambition and the fact that only a small proportion of Manchester’s gig goers like good music. Former Bullies and their friends are pretty much the center of Manchester’s DIY scene, which includes the Comfortable On A Tightrope promoters, David Bailey’s absolutely amazing shop Good Grief, and a hunk of great bands.

Brown Brogues

Our latest thing is a tape of Brown Brogues‘ early recordings. Brown Brogues are like John Dwyer from Thee Oh Sees’ illegitimate northern English sons. This has awesome buzzsaw riffs and drums straight out of The World’s Strongest Man.

Mazes
The first thing we did was a Mazes single because I didn’t want to mess up anyone else’s pride and joy through my ineptitude. I don’t want to bang on about Mazes though.

If you happen to find yourself in the UK at the end of the month, Suffering Jukebox are holding a launch party at the Deaf Institute on August 29th with most of their roster playing live, details here.
