The pixel is a modest building block in digital imaging. Its square form becomes apparent as we zoom in too closely on an image, and pays homage to the nostalgic days of early video and arcade games. Its humble form exudes instant retro-chic but also has an appealing simplicity, as an elemental unit inexplicably tied to the digital pictures that are ubiquitous in most of our lives.
Celebrating its uncomplicated yet blocky existence is David Stoll with his art project 4×4 Pixels. The idea is as simple as the creations: What can you do with a 4×4 pixel grid? Some of the results are below, for the rest go here.
