Watch Undersmile’s Spooky, Candlelit New Video for “Song of Stones”

Heavy grunge-meets-sludgy doom quartet Undersmile is one of the London heavy music scene’s best-kept secrets, but here’s hoping that changes now that they’ve both dazzled crowds at Roadburn and released a stunning new album, Anhedonia, via rising UK label Black Bow Records. Tartarus Records handled the cassette, while the album is available digitally from the band themselves (and is streaming on Bandcamp). It’s well worth a listen if you’ve ever wondered what it would sound like if a young Courtney Love had joined the Melvins and gotten a Khanate tattoo instead of getting mixed up with that Kurt fella.

One of the things that makes Undersmile so great (besides their undead riot grrl-meets-Neurosis vibes) is the band’s fluid dynamic—they play as though they’re all wrapped in each others’ neurons, so in tune it’s almost unsettling. Perhaps it’s magic… or perhaps it’s because the band is comprised of two married couples who’ve been close friends for years., who also collaborate in a softer, more folk-influenced side project, Coma Wall.

Undersmile’s new video for “Song of Stones” plays up the dual frontwoman angle to chilling effect, splicing shots of guitarists and vocalists Hel Sterne and Taz Corona-Brown as gossamer corpse brides with footage of them possessed by their instruments, eyes rolled back and strings tuned low. Watch it in all its spooky glory below:

Check out the rest of Anhedonia, too, while you’re at it:
