Do Your Own Projection Bombing [Instructables How-To]

Similar to our Creator James Powderly’s laser tag project, this Instructables How-To on Projection Bombing enables you to get your message across on public buildings and landmarks without that nasty property damage to worry about. While it’s eye-catching, it’s also non-permanent so you won’t feel like a vandal. Instead, you’ll create a transient piece of art that can be seen from blocks away. Just be careful with that blue language…

The difficulty level of implementing it is pretty easy—the most challenging aspect will be getting access to the materials you need: a DC to AC power inverter, a digital projector (the tutorial’s based on a 2500 lumen projector or smaller), a VGA male to male cable, a car, a laptop (anything that plugs into the projector will do), and if you want the projection to last longer than your laptop battery, you’ll need a 200 watt DC to AC power inverter with cigarette lighter attachment. And of course you’ll also need to create some quality content for display. If you can’t think of anything, consult your local graffiti writer or use an example from the Graffiti Research Lab.

Once that’s done, download some Graffiti Research Lab software that prepares the media player for you (full screen, high contrast, etc). Then, all you’ll need to do is choose a location, taking into consideration certain factors like a bright surface color and low ambient light. Once that’s settled, you can set up your equipment, keeping in mind that the projector works best on the car roof with the inverter on the dashboard, and find a power source. Once the projector is turned on, hook up the laptop and start bombing.
