Ever since Tim Berners-Lee invented the internet way back in the last century (1989, to be precise), things have moved at an ever rapid pace. In the blink of an eye, we’re now sharing all our lives online, while our smartphones track our every move, and large companies horde our data and make a fat profit from it while we happily keep spewing it all out into cyberspace like it’s some kind of race. But with its many ills, it’s also brought with it many good things, like the speed of communication, its motivational power, the streamlining of our working lives, cat videos, and the that fact you can order a pizza without having to talk to anyone. These things we should be grateful for.
But what would happen if they took our internet away from us? But no! But yes. They could and they did (in Egypt). In this documentary-in-progress, called #killswitch, Akorn Entertainment want to sharpen our senses to what threatens an open and free internet, and by extension, democracy as we know it today. They spent their time speaking to academics, writers, and people who know all about the internet, to find out how some greedy people are trying to steal your internet when stuff happens that they don’t like. And now they want to interview more people: lobbyists, politicians, government officials, and corporate media executives and need help raising the money to do it.

They’ve taken to crowdfunding to finance the project, to keep it free from corporate interference, so if you want to help out head on over to their Kickstarter page and show them the money. And in the name of all things democratic, you can even suggest who you think they should interview. Read more about the project over on their website.
