A new leak has supposedly revealed the plot for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie adaptation. If true, the leaked synopsis might have just revealed which Resident Evil games the film will be centered on.
Resident Evil Movie Leak May Have Revealed Which Games It Will Take Influence From

In early March, Sony announced that Zach Cregger would be rebooting the Resident Evil movie franchise. Following the press release, the one question players had was: which RE games would the series follow? After all, Paul W. S. Anderson’s critically panned take on the Capcom series pretty much ignores the game’s lore. However, a new leak from prominent film insider Daniel Richtman (DanielRPK) may have given us our first hint at what the reboot will be about.

In a post on the DanielRPK Patreon page, the journalist posted a brief synopsis of the plot of Cregger’s Resident Evil film: “Bryan (Austin Abrams), a laid-back organ courier, is sent on a late-night delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital. En route through a snowy mountain road, he accidentally hits a strange woman with his car. She survives—but something is very wrong. As he tries to help, Bryan stumbles into a full-blown outbreak involving horrifying tentacle-based mutations and bio-engineered monstrosities.”

With the synopsis mentioning Raccoon City and a full-blown outbreak, this has led many players to speculate that the new film will focus on either Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 3. Given that both sequels take place in the infamous city with the outbreak already fully in effect, this would make the most sense.
Although if the synopsis is true, it looks like the movie might focus on new characters. Although it could also just be the film’s beginning intro. Regardless, it appears the Resident Evil movie reboot looks to be going back to the classic games.
Zach Cregger Confirms that New RE Movie Will Be Faithful to the Video Games

In a recent interview, Zach Cregger actually opened up about why he wanted to reboot the Resident Evil movie franchise. “I love the games. I played all of them. I played Resident Evil 4 a hundred times through. I’m obsessed with it. And so, I just want to tell a story that feels like it’s honoring the experience you get when you play the games.”
In more good news for Resident Evil players, Cregger also revealed that he isn’t taking any influence from the previous film series. “I haven’t seen the movies, that’s just not my thing. But the games are my thing. That’s just a playground I just love….I think the movie is going to rip. I think it’s going to rip.” So it sounds like the Barbarian and Weapons Director is completely focusing on the Capcom games for inspiration.
While the leaked synopsis doesn’t confirm the movie will be about Resident Evil 2 and 3, it makes the most sense. After all, Resident Evil infamously takes place in the Spencer Manor. The sequel games are also perfect for a film adaptation, as they focus on several characters. The Raccoon City arc has many arcs that would be an easy transition into a film. With Cregger saying he wants the new Resident Evil movie to honor the games, we might finally get a faithful adaptation of the Capcom horror franchise.
