Boogie with a Bevy of Blockbuster-Grade CGI Dancers

Dance, as a language, is a universal one, which is why it’s confusing and thrilling to see humanoid chunks of gold, spider webs, and fur monsters getting down on the Instagram account of Esteban Diácono (previously). We can watch them shuffle, shake, and get low for as long as it takes for the mind to catch up to the eyes and figure out what’s going on.

The artist and motion graphics designer has been experimenting with motion capture, the until-recently Hollywood-grade technology used to turn Andy Serkis into Gollum in  in Lord of the Rings and give the aliens in Avatar realistic facial expressions. Dianoco’s bite-sized dance routines look impossible because they were—that is, until the animation software and 3D scanning equipment necessary to pull them off simply wasn’t accessible. Diácono uses a new software from Adobe called Fuse, which makes these wonderful animations possible.

We’ve tracked a pantheon of artists including Matthew Plummer-Fernandez, Scott Page, Kevin Margo, Marshmallow Laser Feast, Lee Griggs, Oliver Laric, Kyttenjanae, Pussykrew, Jesse Kanda, Zolloc, Albert Omoss and more as they’ve advanced the medium for the everyartist. Diácono’s animations are a fun addition to the burgeoning medium. Check them out below.
