Lumpens Debuts A New “Visual Art Jam Performance”

Whenever a new project from Korean visual mastermind Lumpens comes to light, our expectations couldn’t be higher, and yet he never seems to disappoint. Take for instance the recent Taekwon V 3D projection mapping he did in collaboration with DJ Soulscape. The two brought to life Seoul’s National Assembly Building, morphing it into the iconic form of South Korean national robot hero, Taekwon V, and lending a narrative to the projection mapping trend for what may be the first time.

This Friday evening, Lumpens will put on a multi-disciplinary performance series called VAJP in Seoul, and it promises the same multi-sensorial satisfaction we’ve come to expect from the versatile creator. Incorporating Lumpens stunning visuals with contemporary dance, DJing and live music, the performance promises to create a dynamic, immersive environment for the audience.

What is VAJP? Lumpens, in his own words, gives us a little insight as to what VAJP is, can be, and will be:

VAJP is an acronym that stands for Visual Art Jam Performance, and true to its meaning, it’s the collaboration between my artwork and those of other genres of artists, coming together into one performance. Having started when I was still a student, this project has slowly grown in scale and so brings us to [this] Friday evening’s showcase at Platoon.

VAJP started with the objective of stepping out of my frame of artwork (the monitor/CRT) and seeing what results from the combination of other artists’ domains.
Now, through the combination of various technology and art, and even more, the elements of entertainment, I as a visual artist can get away from the gallery or monitor and directly see and communicate with the audience.

In particular, this third VAJP is different from last year’s because we’re bringing on a pianist and interactive art. Also, after the performance, DJ Soulscape of 360 Sounds and the FOUNDATION crew are DJing an after-party.
