MoMA Acquires Iconic Rainbow Flag

Yesterday, MoMA announced that they have acquired artist Gilbert Baker’s 1978 Rainbow Flag for its design collection. The news coincides with worldwide celebrations of Pride Month and harkens back to the historic moment when the flag was first raised, nearly 30 years ago in San Francisco. Baker’s original design includes eight colors —hot pink, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue, and violet — with each color symbolizing a theme: sexuality, life, healing, sunlight, nature, magic/art, serenity/harmony, and spirit. The Rainbow Flag joins the museum’s impressive accumulation of universal symbols, which include the @ symbol and the Creative Commons logo.  Related:
