Pelosi won 134 to 63 against the Ohio representative, whose last-minute bid to challenge Pelosi as House leader was seen as more of a symbolic gesture than a real threat to her 14-year tenure, calling for a shake-up in party leadership following the devastating results of November’s election.
Ryan maintained that Pelosi had lost touch with working-class voters, saying that he “could make a big difference pulling those Trump voters back.” Pelosi, who mostly avoided a debate with Ryan in the time leading up to the House vote, maintained that she had “strong support from our friends in the unions, including steelworkers.”
