The general purpose of the shootout is to decide a game that’s tied at the end of regulation in an exciting yet timely manner.
One was accomplished but certainly not the other as HC Ajoie earned a 3-2 win over HC La Chaux-de-Fonds in a second-tier Swiss B league 46-shot shootout spectacle. Thibault Frossard scored the winning goal as the 45th shooter, before teammate Ludovic Waeber saved HC La Chaux-de-Fond’s final attempt of the game to put an end to the near-20 minute madness.

The 23-round shootout broke the previous record of 14 rounds for a Swiss League contest and it’s believed to be a world record for a men’s hockey game at any level, according to the International Ice Hockey Federation. The teams did not have to go through their entire lineups before reusing shooters, as per IIHF rules, and several players on both clubs went four times.
The marathon shootout eclipsed the NHL record of 20 rounds set during a 2014 contest between the Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers.
