Editing, transforming and sharing photos got a whole lot easier with apps like Hipstamatic (or its free, social counterpart Instagram), but these programs don’t really allow you to showcase your “eye” for photography (or preferred filters) offline.
To convey the same message in your home, as say on your Flickr or Tumblr feeds, this week’s Instructables How-To from Alexa Westerfield (a.k.a. Swelldesigner) will show you how to embed your good taste into your most intimate surroundings—your apartment.

Some tools and materials you’ll need to create your shadow box are an image if your choice, vellum paper, the Perfect Printing Pouch (highly recommended), double-sided tape, photo editing software, an Xacto knife, battery powered tea light and a shadow box.
First, measure your shadow box and then resize the photograph in your preferred editing software. Adjust the dimensions to match those of your box.

Printing on vellum can be tricky, so avoid ink smears by using the Perfect Printing Pouch to give the paper a powder-like coating. Then print your photo.

Cut out the image with the Xacto knife and line the backside with double-sided tape.

Press the image into place on the front of the shadow box and use the tea light as a backlight to get that authentic vintage feel.
Visit the Instructables How-To for further instruction, more detailed photographs, and tips on where to buy materials.
