What do you get when you mashup two mashup albums? A blackhole that brings about the end of space-time? Well no, you get a meta-mashup called Mashed Up Mashup (or Mashup squared) which is what Evan Roth did with Girl Talk’s Night Ripper and All Day albums. It’s a nice idea but a bold move, one that could’ve easily resulted in a soundclash that sounded as listenable as some saucepans falling down a metal staircase. Fortunately for Roth, who you may know as co-founder of both the Graffiti Research Lab and the Free Art & Technology Lab (F.A.T. Lab), it worked out reasonably well. Rather than just ending up as a curious and amusing ironic experiment, it actually flows very well. OK, so it might have some issues with clarity and suffer from some lyrical overlapping, and yes, there are a few moments that descend into sheer unintelligible cacophony, but that’s what you’re going to get when you beat-match two mash-up albums.
