The Latest In Browser-Based Gaming

Last fall we brought you five browser-based games that utilize HTML5, and since then we’ve seen a ton of similar interactive entertainment like a music video that traverses through Twitter and Facebook and even one set in Photoshop… not to mention all the new interactive films out there.

While we’re still obsessed with the Kinect and all the cool projects the console has given way to, we decided to give it a rest and feature some games that you can access right here, right now, without leaving your computer. If that afternoon slump has hit, here are three new browser-based games to pass the time. Did we miss anything?

Katamari!

If you played Katamari Damacy on PlayStation 2, then you’ll be quick to cue up this hacked version on your browser. Instead of rolling a ball around various locations in the “real world” in an effort to rebuild the constellations, you paste the URL into any web page and slowly suck up the bits and pieces of the site until all you’re left with is a gigantic beach ball of text, images and links. The looping, upbeat soundtrack is also a real pick-me-up. Hint: If you’re using a computer with a trackpad, make sure to choose the “left-hand” control option before starting the game.

Famous Objects From Classic Movies

Even though the title is somewhat of a mouthful, this hangman-esque game makes up for it with its sleek design and pop culture trivia content. You’re shown a simple object and have three chances to guess the letters that make up the movie’s title. (It’s harder than it sounds!) Also incorporated into the design are links to the trailer and IMDB profile, which is a great way to make sure you’re maintaining cultural relevancy. There doesn’t seem to be a losing option in this game, so be prepared to play this one for a while. Hint: Don’t see your favorite movie? Suggest a movie paired with an object and if the developers like it, you may see it in a later version.

URL Hunter

We love this game for it’s beautiful simplicity. Located entirely in your browser’s URL bar, this shooter game positions you as the “O”, using the arrows on your keyboard to chase the rogue “A’s” (or “animals”), hitting the spacebar to claim your game. You have only 30 seconds to kill as many A’s as you can, so you better be quick on the draw. If you’re a fan of popular arcade game Big Buck Hunter, then this one is for you. Hint: If the whole animal thing makes you squeamish, play Kick Ass (not based on the Superhero flick) instead.
