Behold, the Modern Machine

In director Godfrey Reggio’s epic documentary Koyaanisqatsi (1982), the ebb and flow of urban footage becomes something of an inside-out metaphor for the agonist-antagonist forces at work within a physical body at once human and animal. As French artist Florian Rouzaud Cornabas shows in Urban Conformation 74:19, the second installment in his series of visually-manipulated urban timelapses, the human side seems to have over-triumphed; now, the city feels less like the work of man than his gear-grinding heir apparent.

“Extracted from our urban surroundings, the pieces of a puzzle take different shapes and a fusion of colors and structures emerge from it,” Rouzaud tells The Creators Project. “The sound design and the hypnotic voice guide the images through this oneiric universe.” But is it a dream on the horizon, or a looming nightmare?
