On Wednesday we reported on the release of a new Prince EP, Deliverance, featuring six previously unheard songs from the legend, planned to coincide with the first anniversary of his death on Friday 21 April.
However, as swiftly as the gift was given, it has now been taken away: it appears that Prince’s estate, who were not consulted about the release of the music – which was initially recorded with and later mixed and finished by engineer Ian Boxill – have rightfully issued a lawsuit to block it. The EP’s title track, “Deliverance,” and the EP’s iTunes pre-order page have since been taken down.

As we said yesterday, the move to put new Prince music into the world did feel pretty out-of-character, especially since during his lifetime, Prince was so particular about the music he did release. And though it’s true that his much-discussed “vault” of unreleased music definitely exists, it’s heartening that his estate appear to be respecting his wishes to keep it that way. His fans, thirsty as we may be for a taste of new music, will just have to put up with his flawless back catalogue instead. And that’s not the worst news, is it?
