While surfing the web, we stumbled across this very interesting article written for the Journal of the Moving Image by Matt Hanson, founder of onedotzero, writer, cinematic futurist, and film critic. He begins by talking about a Cinematic Floating Point, the point at which movies extend beyond the screen, creating multiple narratives across multiple platforms, made more and more possible by the new digital medias being used across the web and beyond.
Directors like our creators Radical Friend, Romain Gavras, Takeshi Murata, and Danny Perez are at the forefront of this revolution. They and other contemporary filmmakers like them are utilizing computer software to create 3D worlds where they can set their stories, such as Molotov’s Alva and His Search for the Creator: A Second Life Odyssey made in 2008 by Douglas Gayeton. It’s a documentary made in Second Life where the protagonist, an avatar, ponders what it means to exist in a virtual world. It was released exclusively on online video channels, iPods, and mobile phones; the new medias of distribution. I’ve included the first episode in the video above. If it’s up your alley, also check out the site Minimovies, which featured the film. It’s a documentary channel that screens episodic documentaries made up of 8 or so episodes that can be consumed on mobile phones and online, while on the commute to work or whenever.

As the technology evolves, the way we consume media evolves; and as our cinematic tastes expand, new genres of cinema arise to meet our increasing demands on our entertainment.
