Our Top 5 iOS Games

During our morning commute, we hate being disturbed by subway ads or, worse yet, other people, so we play video games on our phones to pass the time and shut out the rest of the world. Since the iPhone is just as good (if not better) than a Sony PSP or a Nintendo DS, not to mention more convenient, we use it more and more. Here’s a selection of the best games for iOS.

Last year at the GAMMA games festival, curated by Kokoromi, was all about “one button games.” Poto & Cabenga is a game especially made for that festival and it can be played directly on your browser or on iOS. Cabenga and his trusty horse Poto get separated by a huge flying snake and you have to control both characters—in and outside of the snake—at the same time. Like any other Honeyslug game, this one looks stunningly good. The game is casual enough to kill 5 minutes while waiting in a queue, but it’s also challenging enough to be played for longer periods of time.

Spirits is a game by German developers Spaces of Play. You might already know them from their first iOS game Mr. Bounce. In Spirits, your objective is to guide white ghosts through a dangerous world filled with pits and spikes. Just like Poto & Cabenga, this is a gorgeous game that shows just how good games can look on the iPhone. The game gets quite hard near the end, so schedule in some game time for this one.

In Ratloop’s Helsing’s Fire, you assist Dr. Helsing and Raffton on their quest to kill Dracula and his evil vampire allies. But instead of using a stake or holy water, you’re armed with a torch and multicolored tonics. The game won the first prize in the mobile category of this year’s Independent Games Festival, and in our opinion, they totally deserved it.

This next one is less of a game in the traditional sense, but it’s so good we’re willing to let that minor detail slide. Strange Rain by Opertoon is more of an interactive piece of art—by pressing the touchscreen you generate new music and words. There’s no real goal, but it’s super relaxing after a long day of work.

Just like Strange Rain, Noby Noby Boy is not your traditional kill-zombies-with-magic game. You control Boy, a huge worm, and you can do whatever you want with him. He loves listening to music, he uses GPS to travel with you to foreign countries, but more than anything else, he loves being stretched. Every time somebody stretches Boy, his pink female counterpart Girl stretches with him, making Girl’s size the collective effort of the whole world stretching.
