Midlands-born R&B singer-songwriter Jorja Smith spent a year acclimatizing to fame and collaborating with superstars before releasing her debut album, Lost & Found, last Friday. But today is just her 21st birthday, and this is still just her debut. No amount of MOBO nominations or Drake features should amount to a presence as assured as Smith’s.
Her first NPR Tiny Desk Concert went up this morning, and it’s a brilliant showcase for her effortless talent. Backed by a four-piece band, Smith runs through smoothed-out versions of “On My Mind,” “Teenage Fantasy,” and “Blue Lights,” singing them all with an impossibly languid calm. Watch the set in full over at NPR.
