PREMIERE: QUILT – “Roller”

Good music tests our perceptions of reality. That said, there’s something off about the sunny optimism to “Roller,” the latest single from Boston psych-pop outfit Quilt. In today’s video for the track, premiering below, director Adi Putra explores the strange layers at play in the lyrics: “Honey, I’m a roller underneath the coals that hide me when it’s raining.”

What at first appears to be the story of a typical suburban household unfolds into anything but. We watch that same family gather round the table for a crystal ball instead of dinner. It’s a weirdly fitting image, as Quilt’s music is surreal and evocative in that same gentle way. The Boston-bred quartet crafts lovely sounding songs from psychedelic vibes that are present but benign. No chance of a bad trip here. If anything, it’s whimsical.

Vocalist, guitarist, and writer of “Roller” Anna Fox Rochinski explained the thought behind this unique music video:

“I spent the holiday season developing a concept with Adi Putra about a strange, semi-dysfunctional family. The idea originally stemmed from our conversations about our favorite films that demonstrate a family structure that is interrupted by an outside presence and/or has some extremely strange things brewing underneath an otherwise normal surface. I play a disillusioned daughter in a traditionally structured nuclear family, who maintains a relationship with these mysterious apparitions as an escape from her family and a way to feel like she belongs somewhere. It is never made quite clear if they are a figment of her imagination or not, but either way they sure have some cool dance moves. Shane, John and Keven and I are all siblings with these identical twin kid sisters and a mom and dad. I really love Adi’s aesthetic and his appreciation for all things surreal, strange and yet deeply emotional. We were all instantly drawn to his work and had a blast shooting the video in Venice, CA with Adi and his crew.”

The song comes from the group’s upcoming record Plaza out February 26 on Mexican Summer. Pre-order it here.
