Blending The Unquantized Beats Of Mr. Dibia$e

What a lot of people don’t realize when they see a producer pounding away at an MPC is that when putting a track together in the studio, most producers use quantization in some capacity. That is, they use the software to knock all the pad hits in line with a grid, eliminating the human error that causes drum sounds to be just slightly offbeat.

Mr. Dibia$e never quantizes because he feels that it forgoes the swing, the natural percussive inclinations of the producer, for pristine perfection which often times doesn’t sound as funky. As a result, Dibia$e’s beats are unique. Both his experiments in 8-bit and instrumental hip-hop produce incredibly groovy tracks that any DJ would love to bring into the mix. The issue is that Dibia$e’s unquantized beats are a huge pain in the a$$ to blend together.

Despite this truth, I put together a DJ mix of all Dibia$e tracks for Noisey.

Have a listen and enjoy the tracks, or just listen to point out my mistakes. If you dig the mix and want to go looking for more, just make sure to use the dollar sign when searching or you’ll end up with a ton of results for the original Mr. Dibiase.
