Video: Anushka – “The Constant”

For a small country, England has plenty of monsters: werewolves, gremlins, grindylows, witches, that Loch Ness dude, Pete Doherty, Eddie Izzard. Why, it’s a virtual fright-fest of foggy fens, abandoned farm houses, and dark country roads where one could get easily get splattered and noshed on and never heard from again.

But evil often lurks in one’s own backyard, as we’re reminded by this campy ’80s horror flick (straight to VHS!) delivered to us by Anushka (and director Eoin Glaister). Make sure you lock your doors and keep mom and dad in sight because you never know when a mutant version of Britain’s most bumbling garden pest might rise up and smote thee. Given that crazed British farmers are trying to kill 70% of countryside badgers, it’s no surprise that one would rise up and fight the power.

Maybe even more surprising is the soundtrack to this Halloween epic—a soulful and R&B-tinged yet bass-heavy house cut with a hypnotic synth line. This is the territory that Anushka does best, rinsing the clubs and the afterparties by mixing fragile vocals (from Victoria Port) with dancefloor heft (courtesy of Max Wheeler). The duo are already getting love from UK underground tastemakers like Karizma, Brackles, Moxie, and Target, not to mention Gilles Peterson, who released their Yes Guess EP on his Brownswood label.
